KEWANEE - A private funeral service has been held for Betty Sullivan, a former president of the Peoria Diocesan Council of Catholic Women and recipient of the Pere Marquette Award for her out- standing volunteer work on behalf of the Diocese of Peoria. Burial was in Osceola Grove Cemetery in Bradford. A celebration of life will take place at a later date. Mrs. Sullivan died Jan. 7, 2022. She was 90. Born in Kewanee on Nov. 10, 1931, Betty Harper attended Visitation Catholic School and Kewanee High School. She went on to study at Saint Mary-of-the- Woods College in Saint Mary- of-the-Woods, Indiana, and graduated from Loyola Univer- sity in Chicago in 1953. It was there that she met her husband, W. Dennis Sullivan. They were married for 62 years and had five children, who survive her: Joseph An- gelo (Hazel Deonne) Sullivan, Christopher Gerard (Shelly) Sullivan, Gregory Vincent (Darla Sullivan Bates) Sullivan, John Martin (Tracy) Sullivan, and Mary Therese Sullivan. Also surviving are nine grandchil- dren and stepgrandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren. Mrs. Sullivan was very active at St. Mary Parish (now part of

Saint John Paul II Parish) in Kewanee and was a longtime member of the Altar and Rosary Society. She also served on the parish council and was a cantor at Mass for many years. Like her mother before her, Mrs. Sullivan was involved with the Peoria Diocesan Council of Catholic Women. In addition to serving on the board, she held avarietyoficesandwaspresi- dent from 2004 to 2006. She started writing Council Com- ments for The Catholic Post in 1977 and was a regular contribu- tor until Joan Weber succeeded her in 2004. Mrs. Sullivan was among the inaugural group of Pere Mar- quette Award recipients, who were honored by the Diocese of Peoria in 1997. The PDCCW presented its Exemplar Award to her in 2015. She had an interest in genealo- gy, learned to tutor children with dyslexia in order to help three of her own sons and then countless others, and later taught adult literacy at Black Hawk Col- lege East, and was a longtime Girl Scout leader, among other things. Mrs. Sullivan was preceded in death by her parents, Elizabeth Ann and William Harry Harper; her husband, William Dennis Sullivan; her sister, Sister Har- riet Harper, OP; and her brother, William Harper.
