MOLINE - Father Mark DeSutter, pastor of Sacred Heart Parish here since 2014, is observing 40 years of priesthood on Sunday, May 29. It was on that day in 1982 that he was or- dained by Bishop Edward W. ORourke at St. Marys Cathedral in Peoria. The son of Joseph and Mary Ann DeSutter, he was born May 25, 1955, in Kewanee. Father DeSutter earned a bachelors degree in history from St. Meinrad College in Indiana, and completed his studies for the priesthood at St. Meinrad School of Theology, where he received a master of divinity degree. After ordination, Father DeSutter served as a member of the Rock Island- Milan Cooperative Ministry as parochial vicar at St. Pius X, Rock Island, and then was parochial vicar at Holy Trin- ity, Bloomington. In addition to Sacred Heart, Moline, he was pastor at Blessed Sacrament, Morton, for 14 years. His ministry also took him to St. Johns Catholic Newman Center in Champaign, and St. Francis of Assisi Catholic New- man Center in Macomb as chaplain. Mail for Father DeSutter may be sent to Sacred Heart Church, 1608 13th St., Moline, IL 61265. ROCK ISLAND - Father Daniel J. GREEN VALLEY, Ariz. - Father Joseph Anderson likes to look up. Hes not necessarily seeking heav- enly guidance - although there are those moments - but studying the sky. I got to know astronomy when I first came here to Green Valley, he told The Catholic Post. Its been very helpful to appreciate the universe in which we live. Theres a certain regularity about it, but theres also a certain irregularity. Things come together eventually for the good of the expanded universe. Father Anderson has had many ways to seek and know God over the last 60 years of ordained ministry and retirement didnt put an end to that. These days he concelebrates Mass at Our Lady of the Valley Church and still hears confessions as often as possible. To see the light coming on for people after theyve made a good confession is one of his greatest joys. The parish will help him celebrate his milestone anniversary with a Mass on Friday, June 3. A brunch will follow in the parish hall.
Fr. Anderson celebrating 60 years: 'It's a good life'
The son of John C. and Margaret (Mc- Grath) Anderson, Father Anderson was born March 21, 1935, in Peoria. He attended St. Mark School and Spald- ing Institute in Peoria and went to St. Ambrose College in Davenport, Iowa, with the thought of studying medicine. Then the Lord inspired me to think about the priesthood because I could do an awful lot of counseling, he said. A lot of people come into confes- sion and want counsel. They want some guidance, they want an understanding of how they reform their lives a little bit and reach out a little more lovingly to their family and friends. Father Anderson earned a bachelors degree in philosophy from St. Ambrose College, and completed his studies for the priesthood at St. Paul Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota, and Conception Semi- nary in Conception, Missouri. He was ordained on June 3, 1962, by Bishop John B. Franz at St. Marys Cathedral in Peoria. Two members of the class are deceased: Father John J. Podlashes and Msgr. Wil- liam Watson. Father Anderson was appointed paro- chial vicar at St. Patrick, Washington, in 1962; St. Mary, Moline, in 1969, Epiph- any, Normal, in 1971; and St. Columba, Ottawa, 1973. He would go on to lead St. Patrick in Elkhart, St. Thomas Aquinas in Mount Pulaski, and St. John in Middle- town; St. Anne, East Moline; St. John in Walnut and Immaculate Conception in Ohio; St. Casimir, Streator; St. Hyacinth, LaSalle; and Sacre Coeur, Creve Coeur. He was granted senior status in 2005.
OFFERING ENCOURAGEMENT
One of the greatest influences on his priesthood was Father James Fay, the pastor with whom Father Anderson served at St. Columba in Ottawa. At the time, Father Anderson was preparing for his first assignment as pastor in Elkhart and Mount Pulaski. I appreciated everything he did to give me good example, Father Anderson said. I just felt that was a wonderful opportu- nity to get to know how to be a good pastor. I was very much influenced by the way he pastored the people there at St. Columba. He said encouraging people to live and live well is one of the hallmarks of priestly ministry. We are available to help them in their particular needs, especially when theyre sick and dying. Were going to be there, Father Anderson said. He also wants people to know that priests do not give up on anybody, even when they have left the church or have different ideas about what church means. We are going to be available. He uses the word encourage often when he speaks and said he prefers to be positive rather than negative. Theres way too much negative in the world today, he explained. Father Anderson is also grateful. Its been a good life and its been a wonderful 60 years, he said. Mail for Father Anderson may be sent to 685 S.
