Ordination July 23 will give diocese a coadjutor bishop ready to 'Go Make Disciples'
A special 'Post' issue for historic moment
We are pleased to bring you this special edition of The Catholic Post welcoming Coadjutor Bishop-elect Louis Tylka as the day of his episcopal ordination approaches. We are grateful to Bishop Tylka and his family for their cooperation, insights, and the many photos they provided. Our gratitude also extends to church leaders in our diocese and beyond who responded to requests for information or statements. And the pub- lication of this 52-page, full-color edition would not have been possible without the advertising support of the many dioceses, parishes, schools, religious communities, and businesses that took out congratu- latory messages. We thank them all, and join in their well wishes. Some of the regular features of The Catholic Post - local and world news, columns, Book Page, obituar- ies, and more - are found starting on page 40. Meanwhile, below is a glimpse of what this special edition holds inside. We hope our readers spend a lot of time with these pages, getting to know the priest chosen by Pope Francis to assist and eventually suc- ceed Bishop Daniel R. Jenky, CSC. And may these stories inspire prayers for both of our bishops. - The Staffof The Catholic Post

When Bishop-elect Louis Tylka is consecrated as Coad- jutor Bishop of Peoria on Thursday, July 23, the joy will be shared far beyond the walls of St. Marys Cathedral. Our upcoming gathering for his ordination and welcome to the Diocese will be an occasion for the entire church in Illinois to rejoice with Peoria, said Cardinal Blase Cupich, archbishop of Chicago and metropolitan of the Chicago Province, who will preside at the 2 p.m. Mass and serve as principal consecrator. Bishop-elect Tylka served as a priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago for 24 years prior to his appointment to Peoria by Pope Francis that was announced on May 11. The joy, however, extends further - indeed globally. Representing Pope Francis at the episcopal ordination will be Archbishop Chris- tophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio - the popes ambassador to the United States who resides in Washington, D.C. But speaking for Catholics of the Diocese of Peoria, Bishop Daniel R. Jenky, CSC, had special words of wel- come for the man who will eventually succeed him and become the ninth Bishop of Peoria. I give thanks to Almighty God and to our Holy Father Pope Francis for sending us this good man to be our good shepherd, said Bishop Jenky. In a statement to The Catholic Post printed in full on page 10 of this special issue, Bishop Jenky called Bishop-elect Tylka obviously talented, friendly, and very enthusiastic about living here in Central Illinois and serving this Local Church.
ALL INVITED TO WATCH VIA LIVESTREAM
While the number of faithful able to attend the episcopal ordination will be limited because of COVID-19 pandemic guidelines, thousands are expected to witness the ancient rites online via a livestream to be shared on the Diocese of Peorias home page, cdop.org, as well as on its Facebook page. Background on the broadcast plans are found on page 19, and a viewing guide to the liturgy is printed on page 26. Bishop-elect Tylka arrived in the Diocese of Peoria in early July after bidding a final farewell to St. Julie Parish in Tinley Park, which he served as pastor for the last six years. In addition to a lot of unpacking, in recent days he has taken part in Emmaus Days vocation retreats, a young clergy retreat, and a private retreat of his own prior to ordination. He also announced his episcopal motto: Go Make Disciples, taken from Matthew 28:19-20. This is what I feel I am called to do, what were all called to do, Bishop-elect Tylka said of the motto choice in an interview with The Catholic Post that begins on page 4. He will preach at a vespers service with priests of the diocese on Tuesday evening, July 21, and then travel to Belleville on Wednesday for the episcopal ordination of Bishop Michael E. McGovern. After his own ordination on Thursday, Bishop Tylka will travel widely throughout the diocese for several weekends to meet the faithful during a series of regional Masses and receptions. For a list of planned Masses, see page 28. Coadjutor Bishop-elect Louis Tylka looks on as Bishop Daniel R. Jenky, CSC, presides at the ordination of two transitional deacons at St. Mary's Cathedral on June 14. Following Bishop-elect Tylka's episcopal ordina- tion at the cathedral this Thursday, July 23, he will assist Bishop Jenky in leading the Diocese of Peoria. The "coadjutor" title means that when Bishop Jenky eventually retires, Bishop Tylka will automatically suc- ceed him and become the ninth Bishop of Peoria. The Catholic Post/Jennifer Willems

Pope's representive will be present
Archbishop Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio to the United States, will read the papal bull (mandate) from Pope Francis appointing Bishop- elect Tylka to the Diocese of Peoria during the Rite of Ordination at St. Mary's Cathedral on July 23. Arch- bishop Pierre, who resides in Washing- ton, D.C., will also serve as one of the co-consecrators.
